Our Red Wine Month selection & tasting notes
Anura Petit Verdot 2018 Reserve
Simonsberg-Paarl – 14.1%
A full bodied wine with excellent tannin structure, this Bordeaux varietal picked from a single block was aged in French Oak for 24 months. Sweet blackcurrant and ripe plums on the nose give way to juicy raspberry flavours with subtle hints of cedar and walnuts on the palate.
Idiom Zinfandel 2019
Stellenbosch – 14.7%
Zinfandel is a black grape originally from Croatia, also known as Primitivo in Italy. Silky and spicy, this elegant, medium-bodied expression of Stellenbosch Zinfandel is a versatile and refreshing wine with an attractive long finish and a superb power-to-weight ratio. Aromas of raspberry and bay leaf dominate the nose, while an explosive revolving tray of sage, tobacco leaf and cranberry flavours combine gracefully on the palate.
Piekenierskloof Cinsault 2023
Piekenierskloof – 14.3%
The rugged mountain ridge of the Piekenierskloof has developed a reputation for outstanding Rhône-style reds, grown from meticulously farmed and lovingly managed bush vines. This Cinsault is a velvety wine with good colour and concentration. Notes of red berries, cherries, savoury black olives and black spice come together in a well balanced wine with lively fine tannins and an elegant complexity on a long finish.
Rainbow’s End Cabernet Franc 2022
Stellenbosch – 14.5%
Recently winning the best Cabernet Franc in South Africa, Rainbow’s End in Stellenbosch has the perfect terroir for Cabernet Franc. Intensely dark purple in colour, this Cabernet Franc brings perfume of oak with blackberry and hazelnut on the nose, and an intense rich fruit and juicy palate. With broad smooth tannins, it’s spent 12 months in French Oak, and pairs excellently with meat dishes.
Waterford Estate Grenache 2021
Stellenbosch – 13.3%
Lovers of a lighter red will delight in this classical-style Grenache, grown on the sandy slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. Aged for 14 months in porcelain jars and large, 500-litre, old French oak barrels, the wine has a ruby-red colour, leading to smoky cherry and vibrant red fruit aromas that build on the base of subtle licorice spice aromatics. The palate reveals vibrant fruit flavours of cherries and cranberries, with a fresh acidity, savoury salinity and soft, refined tannins.
And, a new addition to select wine lists:
VREDE EN LUST MALBEC 2021
Paarl – 14.08%
On the palate, this Malbec showcases its full-bodied nature with a velvety and opulent texture that coats the mouth. Ripe black fruits dominate, with blackberries and black plums delivering an explosion of juicy flavours. The flavour profile is a harmonious blend of fruit-forward richness and savoury nuances. Dark berries continue to shine, with black cherries and blackberries intertwined with hints of cassis and a touch of dark chocolate.
